Transfiguration Sunday, 11th February 2024 (Last Sunday before Lent)



Mark 9:2-9
9:2 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them,

9:3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them.

9:4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

9:5 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

9:6 He did not know what to say, for they were terrified.

9:7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!”

9:8 Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.

9:9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.


[2] Καὶ μεθ᾿ ἡμέρας ἓξ παραλαμβάνει ὁ ᾿Ιησοῦς τὸν Πέτρον καὶ τὸν ᾿Ιάκωβον καὶ τὸν ᾿Ιωάννην καὶ ἀναφέρει αὐτοὺς εἰς ὄρος ὑψηλὸν κατ᾿ ἰδίαν μόνους· καὶ μετεμορφώθη ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν,

 [3] καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἐγένετο στίλβοντα, λευκὰ λίαν ὡς χιών, οἷα γναφεὺς ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς οὐ δύναται οὕτω λευκᾶναι. 

[4] καὶ ὤφθη αὐτοῖς ᾿Ηλίας σὺν Μωϋσεῖ, καὶ ἦσαν συλλαλοῦντες τῷ ᾿Ιησοῦ. καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Πέτρος λέγει τῷ ᾿Ιησοῦ·

 [5] ῥαββί, καλόν ἐστιν ἡμᾶς ὧδε εἶναι· καὶ ποιήσωμεν σκηνὰς τρεῖς, σοὶμίαν καὶ Μωϋσεῖμίαν καὶ ᾿Ηλίᾳ μίαν.

 [6] οὐ γὰρ ᾔδει τί λαλήσῃ· ἦσαν γὰρ ἔκφοβοι

[7] καὶ ἐγένετο νεφέλη ἐπισκιάζουσα αὐτοῖς, καὶ ἦλθε φωνὴ ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης λέγουσα· οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός· αὐτοῦ ἀκούετε. 

[8] καὶἐξάπινα περιβλεψάμενοι οὐκέτι οὐδένα εἶδον, ἀλλὰ τὸν ᾿Ιησοῦν μόνον μεθ᾿ ἑαυτῶν. 

[9] καταβαινόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄρους διεστείλατο αὐτοῖς ἵνα μηδενὶ διηγήσωνται ἃ εἶδον, εἰ μὴ ὅταν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναστῇ.

[2] εἰς ὄρος ὑψηλὸν: ‘mountain’, ‘hill’. The OT background, e.g.  Moses on Sinai, suggests ‘mountain’

μετεμορφώθη ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν: μεταμορφῶ(όω), ‘trans-form’ (just as in Greek μετά +μορφῶ), not attested in LXX but  post-class. The pass., as here = ‘I am transformed’, ‘transfigured’.  Jesus’ μορφή, ‘form, appearance’ (cl. Gk & LXX) changed.

[3] στίλβοντα: pres. part.,nom. pl., neut., στίλβω, ‘I gleam, glitter’, of polished or bright surfaces (LSJ: Homer & cl. Gk), esp. of brass, etc.

[4] ὤφθη αὐτοῖς ᾿Ηλίας:  ὤφθη, aor. mid., ‘appeared/ let himself be seen’ < ὁρῶμαι (άομαι). ὤφθη is a technical term in LXX for theophanies and angelophanies.

καὶ ἦσαν συλλαλοῦντες τῷ ᾿Ιησοῦ: συλλαλῶ (έω), a cmpd vb, ‘I talk with’ c. dat. pers. (post-cl. Gk, LXX);  the classical vb. λαλῶ (έω), which has several meanings, also means ‘speak’ (its only sense in the NT). ἦσαν συλλαλοῦντες is a periphrastic impf. ( = impf. of εἰμί + pres. part.)  which becomes common in koine (cf. Engl. ‘they were talking with Jesus’).

[6] ἔκφοβοι: ἔκφοβος, a cmpd adj., ‘frightened’ (already in Arist. & LXX).

[7] αὐτοῦ ἀκούετε:   3rd pers. pl. imper., ἀκούω, c. gen., ‘hear’; ‘listen to’; hence (by extension) ‘obey’ (cf. LSJ). The meaning in the verse is ‘continuously listen to’ and thus ‘obey’ him (in the gen.): see EDNT, pp. 52-3, s.v. ἀκοή. Greek, as early as Homer, uses a single vb to denote what in English is denoted by at least two vbs, ‘hear’ and ‘listen to’.
